Overview
During my six-month internship at Comcast, I had the privilege of working as a UX intern with the renowned P2 team. This talented group was responsible for creating a comprehensive suite of tools that serves as the backbone of Comcast's national construction platform. Our mission was to develop systems capable of monitoring construction activities and their associated costs across the entire Comcast service area. Whether Comcast was expanding its services to new users or enhancing the experience for existing customers, our work within the P2 team was critical in ensuring a seamless and successful delivery.
My specific focus during this internship was the Sphere platform, which served as a central repository for a vast array of construction-related data. Through my contributions, I played a key role in optimizing the user experience within this crucial platform. Within this role, I had the opportunity to make significant contributions to various aspects of the platform, including: Intake Page, Notifications Page, and general component design.
The Problem
- Lack of screen space due to excessive data and unnecessary components, leading to a clunky interface.
- Difficulty in designing for responsiveness due to the cluttered interface.
- Usability issues, such as malfunctioning buttons and outdated visual design.
- Disconnection between design and development teams, causing misunderstandings and delays.
- Inadequate documentation for design components, resulting in UI inconsistencies and a fragmented design system.
Goals
- Enhance overall clarity for Sphere users and business partners.
- Organize data and content on the page for improved efficiency and user comprehension.
- Create responsive design components to ensure a seamless user experience across devices.
Ideation
Ideation was key for this project. I conducted numerous ideation sessions with the UX team to figure out user centric solutions. We brainstormed ways to streamline features, maximize screen space, and elevate Sphere's visual appeal.
Moodboards & Wireframing
Moodboards became an essential tool for wireframing and prototyping. By curating inspiration that resonated with our goals, I set the mood for Sphere's transformation. These moodboards served as visual a foundation, inspiring wireframes and prototypes that aligned with my vision.
The journey began with the creation of design system components. Sketching from my design skills, I first visualized these components on paper. I then envisioned and developed these components within Storybook. This framework not only allowed for rapid prototyping but also ensured consistency and flexibility in my design, laying a clear foundation.
The Solution: Sphere Reimagined
After an extensive ideation phase, it was time to bring my visions to life and transform Sphere into a more intuitive and efficient platform. All of my efforts during this internship resulted in a final solution that addressed all the problems I identified at the beginning of this project:
- Cluttered UI
- Unclear Usability
- Unresponsive Design
- Ambiguous Layouts
- No Design System
This project exemplifies the power of integrating design, development, and product management. By combining these three components, I not only solved existing problems but also created a platform designed for future growth. It was a project that showcased the value of a user-centric approach in the industry of UX/UI.
